The Style And Glamour Of Celebrity Weddings – The Ladies – Anushka Sharma

There are actresses and there are ladies who rule the roost when it comes to the Bollywood movie industry. In the recent few months, the world saw two of them getting married and one getting engaged, all set to tie the knot. While Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone have already become ‘missus’, Priyanka Chopra is on her way there. Each of these ladies is known to be powerhouse performers and they have carved a niche for themselves in the industry. It has been no surprise that these three ladies chose men who are just are reputed and forces to reckon with in their own domains. So, it was only natural that their weddings were much talked about, as were the looks they chose to sport. 

In a series of write-ups, we are going to take a closer look at the ‘looks’ that these divas sported for their life changing moments, starting with the lovely Anushka Sharma:

Anushka Sharma got married to cricketer and current captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli in a fairy tale like wedding ceremony, held in Italy. All the festivities happened there only, starting with a mehendi ceremony. 

For her mehendi, Anushka wanted something that was bright and fun, so renowned designer Sabyasachi designed this yellow, blue and pink outfit for the bride to be. The full length, A line skirt allowed Anushka to dance and twirl, while the short sleeves of the top, allowed for her arms to be covered in mehendi. 

Keeping in mind the fairy tale like theme of the wedding, Sabyasachi chose a baby pink for her lehenga, and draped in the lehenga, Anushka looked like a fairy tale princess! The entire lehenga choli was covered with delicate embroidery in shades of pink, green and gold. The delicate net dupatta had similar embroidery, but managed to maintain that ethereal look. 

Anushka had two receptions – one in Delhi and one in Mumbai and for both, she sported extremely different looks. 

For the Delhi reception, she was every bit the traditional Indian bride, decked up in a red and gold Banarasi saree, created by designer Sabyasachi. The saree had traditional motifs and a heavy gold pallu. The red blouse which had a conservative sleeve, was glamourized by embroidery work and embellishment on the edges. 

However, her avatar for the Mumbai reception, she was every bit the Bollywood diva that she truly is! In a pale gold full length skirt, which had work all over, she looked stunning – the sleeveless top was covered on one side with a dupatta, which was tucked into a belt.

The Style And Glamour Of Celebrity Weddings – The Ladies – Deepika Padukone

Continuing the series on our celebrity brides, we are now moving onto the absolutely gorgeous Deepika Padukone, who is the newest entrant into the world of matrimony. As someone who is extremely rooted in her traditions and family values, Deepika Padukone knew that she wanted all the traditions to be followed. So, before she would exchange her vows with fellow Bollywood celebrity Ranveer Singh, she chose to have a traditional pooja. For this pooja, she chose to look simple and wore an orange kurta with a cream coloured churidar. She matched the outfit with an orange coloured dupatta with a gold border and a small gold print all over.

Like her contemporary Anushka Sharma, Deepika also chose Italy as her wedding destination and kicked things off with a mehendi ceremony. The light pink of her outfit matched the rosy hue that the bride to be had on her face. The outfit had embroidery in the same colour, making the outfit look simple, yet elegant. The edges of the dupatta had a darker shade of pink, and Deepika chose to team it with a similar coloured woollen stole.

For another one of her pre-wedding ceremonies, Deepika chose to go with an off tissue saree in pale gold, over which she wore a dupatta of the same colour and material. She teamed the same with traditional kundan work jewellery and the jasmine garland on her hair bun, completed the south Indian look for her!

Because Deepika is from Karnataka, specifically the Konkan region of Karnataka and Ranveer comes from a Punjabi hertage, there were two types of weddings – one south Indian, and one north Indian. For her south Indian style wedding, Deepika was the quintessential south Indian bride, resplendent in a deep red Kancheepuram saree and designer Sabyasachi gave her a veil in tissue, which also had a gold brocade border. The traditional jewellery and the jasmine flowers on her hair made her look gorgeous!

For her Punjabi style wedding, she was yet again traditional, but this time she was a traditionally Punjabi bride. Yet again, she went with the most bridal colour, red, but this time, it was a deeper red. As is common for Punjabi brides, Deepika also chose to go with gota work, but what made her outfit truly coutoure was the embroidery on her dupatta, which said ‘sada saubhagyavati bhava’ (a blessing of eternal matrimonial bliss). Her look was complete with the traditional red chooda and kaleerey.

And then there was the Bangalore reception, for which Deepika chose to dress up in a stunning pale gold silk saree, the pallu of which, she left long, almost like a train for a wedding dress. It was interesting to note that she chose a full sleeved blouse with the saree, which also had a slightly high neckline. She chose to add colour to the outfit with her red chooda and green emerald jewellery.

Why Hand Embroidery Has Stood The Test Of Time

I am someone who travels all over the world, in my capacity of a fashion blogger – I get to see first-hand how the fashion world is changing and evolving and what are the new trends that are emerging. I see new designers bringing about new ideas and designs to the forefront, and then I also see the big established fashion houses trying to better what they have already created. But the one thing that I always notice is that some trends always tend to linger around, and no matter what the dissidents might say, there are certain trends that are here to stay. Embroidery happens to be one of them – while there are those who would say that embroidery is old fashioned, those in the fashion know-how will tell you that this intricate hand work will be around for a really long time.

In order to understand why embroidery is still so loved in the fashion world, I tried to trace to history of this ancient craft. What surprised me the most is that the origins of embroidery can be traced all the way back to 30,000BC, because during archaeological excavations, several clothes, including footwear and hats were found, which had heavy embroidery done on them. Similarly, I read articles about how during an excavation in Siberia, shells were found with embroidery on them and these were dated to around 5000 BC. Pictures from ancient China depicted embroidery that was done using silk thread and precious stones. However, the embroidery in the manner that we recognise it in today, evolved in the Middle East and perhaps China and what had probably started as a decorative method to join animal hides, eventually evolved into something incredibly artistic. There are several evidences that show people from the past wearing clothes and accessories that had been embroidered. 

Hand embroidery design graduated to the next level during the 1100s when beads and pearls were used and started to spread all over Europe. Eventually, bead and pearl embroidery as well as intricate designs became common place. As a matter of fact, the elaboration on the embroidery became a symbol of opulence and several cultures including those in Persia, India, China and the Byzantium empires, embroidery had arrived. Embroidery thrived in India and the Indian sub-continent and several variations of the form emerged – from those which used cotton thread to those which used silk, from pearl and precious stones being used to mirror work. 

With the change in times, embroidery saw a dip – people no longer considered embroidery as stylish. In the Indian sub-continent, embroidery was deigned as something traditional and was used only for outfits that would be used for traditional occasions. However, the arts continued to flourish in certain areas – such as phulkari in Punjab and chikan in Lucknow. While these works were still recognised in these regions, the takers for these intricate arts were dwindling. 

The renaissance for embroidery arrived a few decades when maverick designers from not only India, but around the world started recognising what an intricate art embroidery is and how it can be used even on the most modern of outfits. Very soon, embroidery was making a comeback on the international fashion scene and all of a sudden, more and more people were looking for hand embroidery designs for lehenga online and asking their local tailors whether they could get it done. 

These days, everything from sarees to jeans are being embroidered and people are embracing embroidery with open hands and hearts. Recently, I was asked to do a piece on Indian brides and how they were looking for methods by which they could stay modern, yet have a touch with the traditional. For this piece, I spoke to several brides to be as well as recent brides from all over India and I even got to chat with a few brides who were born and brought up outside India, but were still going for the ‘big fat Indian wedding’. Each of these brides was different – while some were entrepreneurs others were working for multinationals, there were those who had just completed their studies and there were some who were specialised professionals. 

However, what was common to all these brides was the fact that all of them wanted to look like the traditional Indian bride on their special day. Several of them spoke about how they had been researching lehenga embroidery work online and were trying to zero in on the perfect design for their wedding lehenga. There were those who had been spending hours with their designers, trying to work out the ideal pattern for their wedding attire. I even spoke to one bride, who actually travelled to several small towns and villages to understand the intricacy of the work she had imagined. She even had photographs to detail her travels and how she had captured the embroidery being done. With the help of these photos, she had been able to have her dream outfit created with exactly the type of embroidery she had envisioned.

There are also several people who are now looking at handwork lehenga online, because they are realising that some arts, such as embroidery, are truly timeless and will always look special. What is heartening to see is that modern day designers have transformed the once ancient art into something a lot more contemporary and a growing number of people are now recognising how wonderful the world of embroidery is.
